Symmes Township was formed in 1824 and now has over 40 subdivisions and 30 Home Owner Associations. The area is virtually free of industry, as it is almost entirely residential with some commercial shopping. It was named after John Cleves Symmes, who made the "Miami Purchase."
Symmes Township has been the site of Homearama seven times, as it is known for many beautiful custom-built residences.
Many local streets and areas like Harpers Station, Humphrey Rd., Enyart, and Fields Ertel Road are named for long-ago settler families. The township is composed of several villages, for example Camp Dennison.
There are several parks including Lake Isabella, a 25-acre fishing lake. Chateau laroche is a type of old medieval castle erected by one local resident and now a conversation piece. Many seasonal park events include the spring egg hunt at Symmes Park, a "dog days of summer" event, and "Symmesfest."
Some parts of Symmes Township are served by The Sycamore School District and other areas by The Loveland School district because the township does not have its own school district. Buyers beware that some neighborhoods are divided, so be sure you know the district boundaries before you buy, if you prefer one district over the other.
